If you've cracked a single pack of Magic: The Gathering Secrets of Strixhaven, you've seen the Mystical Archive. One guaranteed per Play Booster. Three or four per Collector Booster. Sixty-plus beloved instants and sorceries, reimagined in stunning showcase frames with new metallic foil treatments. For many collectors, the Mystical Archive is the set — it's the reason to buy Strixhaven product even if you don't play Standard.
Here's the complete guide: what's on the Mystical Archive, pull rates, pricing, and which cards are worth chasing.
The Mystical Archive is a bonus sheet — a set of reprints that appears in booster packs alongside the main Strixhaven set. Originally introduced in Strixhaven: School of Mages (2021), Archive cards feature iconic instants and sorceries from Magic's history printed in a gold showcase frame that evokes scrolls in the university library.
The returning 2026 Archive expands the original with new reprints, new artists, and new premium foil treatments exclusive to Collector Boosters.
| Pack Type | Archive Cards | Per Box |
|---|---|---|
| Play Booster (14 cards) | 1 per pack (guaranteed) | 30 per box |
| Collector Booster (15 cards) | 3–4 per pack | 36–48 per box |
| Bundle (9 packs) | 1 per pack | 9 per bundle |
The Collector Booster Box is disproportionately loaded with Archive cards — and the ones inside include premium treatments unavailable anywhere else.
Each Mystical Archive card appears at one of four rarity tiers:
Collector Boosters are the only source for these Archive variants:
A brand-new metallic ink treatment where the scroll frame itself shimmers. These are stunning in person — the foil effect is on the scroll decoration rather than the card face, creating a unique "illuminated manuscript" look. Expect these to command 3–5x the regular Archive price for the same card.
The most collectible cards in the set. Like the original Strixhaven, select Archive cards get Japanese alternate artwork from renowned Japanese illustrators. Original Japanese alt-art cards from 2021 still command $150–$500+ today (looking at you, JP Demonic Tutor). Expect 2026's Japanese Archive cards to start at $50–$100 each and climb from there.
Traditional foil treatment with etched borders — similar to the original Strixhaven's foil etched frame. Premium without the price tag of Silver Scroll or Japanese alt-art.
Based on current Commander staples and vintage value:

Consider the math on a Collector Booster Box ($500):
Even if you only value the Mythic Archives + premium treatments, the Archive portion alone regularly covers 50–70% of the box's price. The main-set rares and serialized Mythics are bonus.
For Play Booster Boxes ($135), you're getting 30 Archive cards — roughly 2–3 Mythic Archives, 9 Rare Archives, and 18 Uncommon Archives. The Mythic Archives alone often justify the box price.
Original Strixhaven Collector Booster Boxes have more than doubled since going out of print. The Mystical Archive was the primary driver of that appreciation. Here's why the 2026 Archive could do the same:
No. Mystical Archive cards are not legal in Standard. They are legal in Commander, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, and Pioneer (depending on the specific card). They're designed primarily for eternal formats and Commander.
The 2026 Mystical Archive contains 60+ cards, including brand-new reprints not in the original 2021 Archive. Exact count confirmed at release.
Play Booster Archives come in regular or traditional foil. Collector Booster Archives come in additional premium treatments: Silver Scroll foils (new for 2026), foil etched frames, and rare Japanese alternate-art variants. Collector-exclusive treatments are significantly more valuable.
The Collector Booster Box is the clear winner for Archive hunters — you get 3–4 Archives per pack (vs 1 in Play Boosters) plus exclusive premium treatments like Silver Scroll foils. If budget is a concern, the Play Booster Box gets you 30 Archives for $135, still excellent value.
Unlikely for the top-tier cards. Japanese alt-art Demonic Tutor, Lightning Bolt, and Swords to Plowshares from 2021 have their own collector identity and supply limitations. The 2026 Archive introduces new artwork and treatments — these are complementary to, not replacements for, the original Archive.
